Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795, was by most accounts the most prolific Baptist hymn writer throughout history. He was born to the family of Rev. John Beddome, also a Baptist minister, in Warshickshire, England. After completing an apprenticeship as a surgeon he moved to London where he felt the call to become a Baptist minister like his father. He settled in Gloucestershire and worked there until his death.
He would write a hymn each week to be sung at the end of his Sunday School lesson. Though not intending to publish these he did relent and allow some to be published in various collections through the years. During his early years in Glouchestershire, he met and even proposed to Anne Steele, who declined his proposal. He eventually met and married Elizabeth Boswell (1732-1784), a daughter of a deacon from his church.
